Hazlett

About Hazlett: Sweden-based, Australian-born Hazlett returns to the road following the success of his latest full-length album, “last night you said you missed me”. Hazlett divulges: “When I started this whole thing I wanted anyone who starts to listen to feel like they’re part of this whole thing with me—growing and finding ourselves along the way.” Over the past several years, Hazlett and his unique brand of Indie Folk have quietly built a devoted following through his heartfelt songwriting and captivating live performances. Whether it’s an intimate clubs, historic theatre, or on festival stages around the world, his ability to create genuine connection with audiences continues to set him apart. From lush acoustic textures to stripped-back ballads, anchored by songs like “doing my best”, “Blame The Moon” and “queen of the season, each piece unfolds like a page from a well-worn journal, exploring themes of self-preservation, distance, yearning, and quiet hope. For the restless hearts, the gentle souls, and the dreamers, the live show and albums it gravitates around are both a confession and a cathartic hug. It reminds us that home is not always a place. Sometimes, it’s a song that stays a while.

SLIFT

About SLIFT: Every previous album by the radiant and heavy French trio SLIFT—brothers Jean and Rémi Fossat and drummer Canek Flores, a friend since high school – has been a fantasia—a composite of genres and forms that allowed the band to improvise, to jam on themes until they seemed to spiral together into space. But, in a bit of intentional irony, SLIFT’s fourth album is called Fantasia without actually being one. It is, instead, their leanest and most direct record, a pointed saga about overcoming international upheaval delivered by a band bearing down without wasting a second. SLIFT didn’t want to lose the message by playing too much. They’re preparing for a battle they think we can still win. As Jean Fossat wrote the core of Fantasia, he thought a lot about Jorge Luis Borges, the Argentinian author whose fiction deftly wove elements of magic and surreality into places and plots that almost felt real. (SLIFT even borrowed the song title “Orbis Tertius” from Borges.) Fantasia, then, is an imagined town plagued by a sense of unknowing and xenophobia, of trying to eliminate anything that disrupts the accepted order. The town comes into focus on “Corrupted Sky,” where Fossat’s narrator tries to dodge doom upon arriving there. Hope starts to emerge during the record’s back half, as people start to remember that they are more than their society’s oppressive uniformity. These eight songs, then, are about trusting in the power to fight back, however hidden it may seem.

Gather ‘round ladies, I am God’s favorite evolved male music journalist ! This is my resounding endorsement of Nice As Fuck ! Damn, this is a good look for me! I can feel my incomplete chromosome regenerating as we speak! Not so much a crass “bio” engineered to cynically exploit the no-shortage-of-sexy-talking-points-that-have-little-to-nothing-to-with-the- actual-music (THEIR EYES ARE UP THERE JESUS ), this is in reality more a tacit referendum on the most successful PR campaign of all time: selling you on the indispensability of the male gender. Which I totally get, and am all-to-well-aware of my complicity in that. It sucks. I am the “post-modern man” [eye roll]. But seriously, I am the new tyranny, like, the sole bearer of the new injunction – as in wow that looks heavy, please, allow me to carry that millennia old baggage for you – but I do think I know what you’re trying to say. Realistically, as a man I am more qualified than you to tell you the ways in which I am radically inferior to every other life form on Earth or elsewhere. Let me explain (at the risk, I know, of going a little “woke bro”): You see, at the dawn of the typographical age, we males, cursed with a right hemisphere orientation, decided that our weaknesses (symbolic thinking, intuition, empathy, etc) were weakness in general. So instead of doing the unthinkable, namely: deferring to anyone else’s vision of the world, we made the way we see things law, and then we wrote them down on traditionally masculine substances like stone, marble, etc, so anytime things got a little fuzzy, we could just mindlessly recite our laws, and in case anyone said, “Hey, that’s just some shit you wrote down!” we’d invent a God (a MALE one) and say, “Hey, don’t look at me! He said it !” and that was that. So, look, along those lines I know it’s a little ironic, not too mention hypocritical , for someone who obviously knows better, to declare (“declaring” being clearly symptomatic of entitlement) from the tower of the patriarchy that Nice As Fuck (aka NAF aka Jenny Lewis, Tennessee Thomas, and Erika Spring aka The Tame Guys) is objectively the best all-female band in the last 25 years (like that should even matte r, you know, do you describe RADIOHEAD as an “ALL OPPRESSOR BAND NO YOU DON’T”) so I just won’t . I won’t blatantly man-splain their musical DNA, play spot-the-influence, or condescendingly take you by the hand and patiently reduce their sound to a bunch of “if blank hetero-married blank and then blank subjugated her sound to blank ’s sound for the sake of maintaining the relationship ”’ s (classic), and go on to tell you – so you, presumably, never have to actually listen to it for yourself and (God-forbid) draw your own conclusions which would naturally be that NAF sounds like if the Clash made Rumors and King Tubby produced it. And, I gotta say, it’s high time for a conscious band to come along and talk power dynamics, talk love, talk guns, talk cookie lips , talk fear, talk fantasy, talk reality (enough with the pizza punk about cats). It isn’t even worth bringing up the crisis of imagination in the lamestream – when I look at some these pop stars that serve as “role models” for these little girls, I just think wow, really great, that’s definitely the message these kids need to hear. Don’t they know that being smart and independent is actually way sexier to me than boop-boop-be-dooing around in garter belts? I mean, I’m trying to liberate these women and they just go and objective themselves! That’s my job! Haha, but really, smart women just really get me going. Off to find some retail counterfeit of the rituals of antiquity designed to bring me into authentic manhood ! Good luck with that, you know? Haha! HAHAHA! H-ha! Hahahahaha! Ha Ha Ha Ha! Ha.

Hey there, this is Shawn James. I’ve had way too many writers think they could sum me up & relay what I’m about from an hour long conversation so they could write my “bio” but I’ve had it. Screw that. I’ll tell it in my own words. I was born & raised In Chicago, Illinois. I grew up on the south side of the city where I attended a gospel church. I was always around a lot of heartfelt soulful music & hardworking, real, down to earth people. Although I no longer abide by any religion, I value the times I had and how they shaped me to be what I am now. I’ve moved around quite a bit living in all different parts of the US. While absorbing all sorts of different cultures from here & around the world, I’ve developed my own sound. I started releasing my own music in 2012 and haven’t stopped since. I play a wide range of music from folk to blues, r&b, Gospel to rock, metal & alotta things in between. The main constant amongst all the genres would be that it’s all done with emotion, feeling, heart & a lotta soul. I mean what I say & deeply feel what I play. I play covers of songs I dig sometimes and although some people may only know me because of those, I’m hardly just a cover artist. If you come see me play live and expect just one style or aspect of what I do, you may be disappointed to learn that our shows are a roller coaster of emotions, musical styles, intensity & energy. I get bored easily & love to mix things up. Be ready & bring your ear plugs just in case.. I’ve always been the underdog so to speak since I’ve never had the backing of a large record label, big marketing firm or massive PR company & I truly like it that way. I feel as though I’ve earned what I have through hard work, determination, a good bit of luck & the great relationships with people I’ve made along the way. I’ve learned a lot of lessons the hard way being in this “music business industry” and that’s alright by me. I’ve seen that with your support (the listeners out there) I can make my wildest dreams come true. If you want to listen to an artist that’s authentic, genuine & original then you’ve come to the right place. I hope you enjoy the music & will join me on this journey that I’m so extremely grateful to be on. Thank you all so very much. Love, Shawn James
