The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival returns to Manhattan this summer, celebrating the spirit of the jazz icon with shows both uptown and downtown that highlight titans of jazz as well as the next generation. Night three is headlined by Ravi Coltrane, the saxophonist son of John and Alice Coltrane, two legendary artists who helped shape modern jazz. An accomplished artist in his own right, Coltrane released six albums as a bandleader between 1998-2012, and was part of the Blue Note 7, a supergroup assembled to honor the 70th Anniversary of Blue Note Records, which recorded the 2009 album Mosaic . Coltrane has collaborated with a wide array of artists, including Steve Coleman, Elvin Jones, Tisziji Muñoz, Brandee Younger, his mom Alice, and his cousin Flying Lotus. The line up also includes the Billy Hart Quartet, a critic’s favorite for over 20 years. Led by the eponymous bandleader and 2022 NEA Jazz Master. Hart is on over 500 records as a sideman including Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter; he was also in the working bands of Wes Montgomery, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, and Stan Getz. Also performing is Kassa Overall, a drummer, producer, rapper, and bandleader from Seattle who has worked with Coltrane, Christian McBride, and Geri Allen;. GRAMMY award-winner Terri Lyne Carrington once described him as “pre-eminent style bender and blender…using melodic and harmonic forms that deftly integrate the new with the old.” Opening the show is Vanisha Gould, a vocalist, composer, and bandleader who has been embedded in the New York City jazz scene since 2015. She’s released three studio albums as a bandleader since 2021; NPR ’s Nate Chinen called her “a major talent who combines a blues cry with a storyteller’s point of view.”
