(just to name a few) . During the year 2000, while in the midst of a global trek with Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD organization, that combined huge festivals with music outreach programs to poor and underprivileged communities, Pato learned that two of his sons had been shot in a drive-by shooting! He immediately put his career on hold and turned his sorrow into the impetus for community & educational initiatives that would consume the next six years of his life. Pato created an organization called “Musical Connections” and in partnership the Community Safety Team, provided tuition and counseling for “at risk” young people in 16 different communities across his city of Birmingham, UK. This project was so successful that Pato was approached by the West Midlands Police Department to tackle the ongoing problem of gun crime in some of the poorest neighborhoods. Within a few years this partnership greatly reduced gun crime across the entire city and Pato was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the BBC and entered into the British Music Hall of Fame during the same year. In 2006, after feeling that he had planted enough seeds of progress within his home community, Pato decided to relocate to Southern California and embark on the second phase of his musical journey, taking with him the years of experience in the field of Loving Service. Since then Pato has recorded many albums and collaborated with artists all over the world. His most recent albums Love Is The Greatest & The Words Of Rastafari were released on Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Records International. Pato Banton’s four-decade public presence has increasingly transcended music to convey a positive & uplifting message of global peace and love for humanity. Now based in Southern California, he continues to record and tour the world extensively with his band The Now Generation, while simultaneously serving as a Teacher, Minister, Counselor and Mentor to his Fans, Friends & Family worldwide! ivy room presents STRANGE CITIES + LADY STARBEAST (ILANA'S BIRTHDAY SHOW) ivy room presents FRIDAY JULY 17TH — THE VINDYS THE HOT TAKES (5th Anniversary Show) STRANGE CITIES LADY STARBEAST (Ilana’s brithday show) — Doors 7:00 pm / Show 8:00 pm ADVANCE TICKETS AVAILABLE / $18 Door ---- IVY ROOM 860 San Pablo Ave, Albany • 21+ — THE VINDYS — The Vindys from Youngstown, OH hit like a shot of adrenaline. Ripping guitars, a punchy horn section, and powerhouse vocals from Jackie Popovec that land somewhere between sweet soul and full-on fire. Their new album Trapdoor blends vintage pop rock with soul in a way that feels both classic and unpredictable. One minute it’s smoky and intimate, the next it’s exploding into something arena-sized. (Jessie Elizabeth to open the night). THE HOT TAKES — The Hot Takes continue to electrify audiences throughout the SF/Bay Area and beyond with their neon-drenched rock and Springsteen-esque energy. By uniting the familiar and future through anthemic songs and a dynamic live show, The Hot Takes promise to call you to the dance floor with your fist in the air. STRANGE CITIES — San Francisco post punk band Strange Cities' sound reflects the foggy, jagged, dystopian landscape that inspired their name. Whether stitching up pieces of a broken past or reflecting on an unknown future, their music skirts the fringe of noise and nihilism, melodic and melancholic, tragedies and trajectories. A post-post punk if you will.. LADY STARBEAST — Defying traditional genre and embodying idiosyncrasy, Oakland-based dark pop artists Ilana Magill and Marc Martell join forces to form the project Lady Starbeast. Ilana is the songwriter and vocalist; Marc creates the instrumentation; and together they record and produce. Ilana combines sultry, powerful vocals with operatic background harmonies, dark, eerie and intricate melodies and a wild, irreverent spirit. Her lyrical content explores the introspective particularities of mental health, while using a broad lens to remark on the human condition. Marc’s dramatic electro-pop instrumentation gives the listener a glimpse into the inner-workings of their minds and hearts, making for a raucous and haunting experience. Broun Fellinis are a sonic adventure from the inner self to the cosmos. The most important thing about music is the way it makes you feel. Musicians are lucky enough to live a life of pure feeling if they can play their personal visionary music with as much integrity and energy as the spirit grants them. For the last 30+ years, the trio called BROUN FELLINIS have been doing exactly this. The Fellinis innovate and disseminate their "Brounsoun", a sonic expression inspired by the ancient to future traditions of Jazz, Rock, Funk, Hardcore, Afrocentric Hip hop, Dub, film music and African/Indian trance sounds. Notable performances include a tour with Ben Harper and co-bills with Gil Scott-Heron, Meshell Ndegeocello, the Roots, Erykah Badu, Bad Brains, George Clinton, Rafael Saadiq, Mos Def, The Last Poets, Living Colour, Zakir Hussain, Bernie Worrell, Jimmy Smith, Galactic, Medeski, Martin, Wood, Ravi Coltrane and many more. Top venues The Independent, Yoshi's and the House Of Blues have hosted the group and in June of 2016, Broun Fellinis celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. ivy room presents GOIN’ LOCAL - RECORD RELEASE SHOW + IN CONVERSATION WITH LENNY & PENELOPE IVY ROOM PRESENTS SUNDAY JULY 19TH GOIN’ LOCAL - RECORD RELEASE SHOW — LENNY KAYE PENELOPE HOUSTON & THE JAILBIRDS DJ SID PRESELY In Conversation with Lenny & Penelope, followed by live musical performances from both. — 5pm doors / 6pm show Advance Tickets Available / $23 Door — LENNY KAYE — As musician, writer, and record producer, Lenny Kaye has been intimately involved with the creative impulse that marks the music. He is a founding member of Patti Smith and Her Band, dating from their first performance as a duo at St. Marks Church in New York’s East Village on February 10, 1971, and has produced such artists as Suzanne Vega, Jim Carroll, Allen Ginsberg, Soul Asylum, Kristin Hersh, Pussy Riot, James, and Jessi Colter. His books include You Call It Madness: The Sensuous Song of the Croon (2004); Waylon: An Autobiography (1994); and Lightning Striking: Ten Transformative Moments in Rock and Roll (2022). His seminal anthology of garage rock, Nuggets: Original Artyfacts of the First Psychedelic Era , is regarded as defining a genre and recently celebrated its golden anniversary. In 2011, France honored him with the distinction of Chevalier de L'ordre des Arts et des Lettres . Lenny’s debut solo album, Goin’ Local , will be released on Yep Roc Records on July 17. PENELOPE HOUSTON & THE JAILBIRDS — The first thing you’ll read in any overview of Penelope Houston’s career is that she fronted the seminal San Francisco punk band, The Avengers. While her involvement in that band and the power of the music she helped create with them should never be diminished, it seems odd that the two short years she spent in a band while barely out of her teens could overshadow a long, award-winning career as a pioneering singer-songwriter. Any serious examination of her work should not put the emphasis on the fact that she was in the Avengers, but instead on why she was in the Avengers. Her fearlessness made her willing to take the creative plunge into the nascent and exciting world of punk rock in the late 70’s without much experience as a writer or performer. The subsequent series of battles, successes and disappointments would provide her with the courage to take risks in everything she’s produced since. The Jailbirds—Michael Montalto (of Red Meat), Tom Heyman, Bill Shupp, and Dan Carr—trade Houston's traditional punk sound for a blend of country, folk, and Americana.
